Using a LocalDB database from MS Access
Think this fits better here than ServerFault but happy to be corrected. I'm trying to use Access to look at a LocalDB database used by an app I'm developing, linking the tables rather than just copying the data. It works, to a degree, but on initially connecting, Access hangs for around 10 seconds then pops up an error; Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: -1 [Microsoft][Sql Server Native Client 11.0]SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: -1 [Microsoft][Sql Server Native Client 11.0]A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to alow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online. After this error appears an SQL Server Login dialog which defaults to "Use trusted connection" with a blank server SPN. If I simply click OK on this dialog then it briefly works; I can import tables and see the data. If I repeat the process without closing Access to import more tables, I get the same 10 second delay and login prompt, suggesting it's not an abnormally long startup time on LocalDB. And any subsequent calls fail, including Access periodically refreshing things in the background, so it's pretty unusable. The process I've used to create the ODBC connection is; Add new System DSN, SQL Server. Specify a name. Enter "(localdb)\v11.0" as the Server. Uncheck "Connect to SQL Server to obtain default settings." Login left at default, "Integrated Windows authentication." Client config is left at default, named pipes. Attach Database Filename, get the path from the connection in Visual Studio- not the connection string, the MDF file it's pointing at. Change the default database to have the actual name of the DB. Googling around hasn't revealed any similar cases and solution. Does anyone know how to fix this?
